Each lab is a social practice "happening" that utilizes movement, stillness, and awareness practices to explore and play with our senses in a new way. Each highly participatory experience is produced as a collaboration between teachers, artists, designers, and chefs who have been exploring the outer limits of their practices.

Together, we create a depth of field that invites each participant to expand their experience of the senses as not just tools of feeling, but also tools of play, connectivity, and discovery.

Project Detail

Sense Lab #1:
In this inaugural Sense Lab, we were curious to see what happens when we connect and transmit communication with each other through food and touch. Artist collaboration with Jenna Barnes

We spend a lot of time learning to connect with ourselves through contemplative practices on mats and cushions, and in our bodies as individuals. When we interface with the "world", touch can become an elusive tool, often reserved only for intimate relationships. However, the power of mindful touch - touch being one of our most telling innate senses- can transform communication, and allow us to light up the wisdom of our other senses… including taste.

Sense Lab #2:
In this second Sense Lab, we were curious to discover what occurs when we connect and transmit collective communication through meditation, movement, and writing. Artist collaboration with Amanda Aileen Fisher

What deeper ways could we connect?
Where and how will we find each other in the collective unconscious, in the liminal space that unites us?
We relaxed three layers inward, slowed down, and witnessed what arose.

The workshop began with a sensorial meditation and movement practice with Nica to uncover what resides beyond our initial intentions. Then we took our discoveries into the writing realm to unfold messages from our subconscious with Amanda. Diving deeper, a subsequent meditation and writing exercise invited forth excavation of our collective unconscious. An opportunity to safely move into the deeper layers together, we wrote our way into connection with the innermost tributaries of our mind.

Sense Lab #3:
There is someone we are thinking about. There is someone who is in our field. They might be a memory, a spirit, a perceived enemy, a thorn in our experience, a stranger with whom we shared a gaze. This show was solo.

In a time where we turn from each other, there is an opportunity to gaze internally and witness our own perception of someone - however deep, shallow, sideways, engaged - and create spaciousness to understand our relationship with them.

In this Sense Lab, we become curious to discover what can arise in form when we tune into our etheric community. We begin with a guided meditation (live on August 13th, recorded otherwise). Then, we are invited to make a record: a portrait in mark making, shape, or drawing directly onto the gallery walls to make seen those who exist in the periphery of our subconscious.

Begin the journey on August 13 at the live meditation and drawing journey, when we will connect as a group to build the collective record. Continue at the opening on August 15, or drop in any time before August 29… Neon Raspberry Art House in downtown Occidental, California.

Supplies will be provided, and participants are invited to bring their own and utilize the gallery as their studio, with the sole prompt to listen to the meditation and then draw, paste, and create a mark of this presence.
